The basics. Lighting.

Lighting is one of the most important elements of any interior, yet it is often considered late in the design process. The right lighting has the power to completely transform a space, influencing not only how it looks, but also how it feels and functions throughout the day.

A well-designed lighting scheme is built on layers. Rather than relying on a single ceiling light, consider combining three key types of lighting: ambient, task and accent.

Ambient lighting provides overall illumination and forms the foundation of a room's lighting plan. This may include recessed downlights, pendants or wall lights that create a comfortable level of brightness.

Task lighting is more focused and supports specific activities such as reading, cooking, preparing food or working. Think bedside lamps, kitchen under-cabinet lighting or a desk lamp in a home office.

Accent lighting adds depth, atmosphere and visual interest. It can be used to highlight artwork, architectural details, shelving or decorative objects, helping to create a more layered and considered interior.

When selecting lighting, it's important to think beyond the fixture itself. The colour temperature of a globe can dramatically influence the mood of a space. Measured in Kelvins (K), warmer light temperatures (typically 2700K–3000K) create a soft, inviting atmosphere that works beautifully in living areas, bedrooms and dining spaces. Cooler temperatures (4000K and above) produce a brighter, crisper light often suited to task-oriented environments such as laundries, garages or some commercial settings. The quality of light is equally important. A high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) ensures colours appear true to life which is particularly valuable in bathrooms.

Developing a considered lighting plan early in the design process ensures fixtures are positioned exactly where they are needed, electrical wiring is coordinated efficiently and switching is intuitive for everyday use. Planning ahead also helps avoid costly changes during construction and allows opportunities for feature lighting, joinery lighting and decorative fixtures to be incorporated seamlessly. The best lighting schemes feel effortless because they have been carefully considered from the outset.

Ultimately, great lighting is about more than visibility. From the placement of fixtures to the quality and colour of light, every decision contributes to the experience of a space. With thoughtful planning and the flexibility of dimmable lighting (a personal favourite detail if budget allows), interiors can feel both highly functional and effortlessly inviting, whatever the time of day.
